Coaching Copywriting
When I mentor or manage other creatives, this is both where we start and part of the criteria we consider to be sure we’re finished.
1.
Consumer-first
Answer “What’s in it for me?”, backed by data or insights. Don’t presume to know them unless you’ve earned it. It’s not about you. It’s about them.
2.
Clear
This can mean straightforward, or it can mean thoughtful application of emotion, humor or behavioral heuristics so desired actions are unambiguous.
3.
Conversational
If it doesn’t sound right when it’s read aloud, it’s probably not right on the page either. Think about ‘copytalking’ instead of ‘copywriting.’
4.
Consistent
Deliver language consistent with the mandatories and requirements. Push beyond expected from there. But be sure you’ve covered the rules of the road.
